Sold Stories #124: The Client Who Said Five Stars Was Not Enough

August 30, 2026

Sold Stories • #124

Every rating scale has a ceiling. Occasionally a client tells you the ceiling is the problem.

Deal typeClient relationship, transaction details kept private
Service areaStaten Island and Brooklyn
ChallengeA rating scale that stops at five
ResultA five-star review saying five was not enough

The situation

Samantha did not write a long review. She wrote nine words. She did not describe the property, the price, the timeline or the negotiation, and this post is not going to invent any of that on her behalf. What she chose to write instead was a complaint about the form itself: five stars was the maximum available and she wanted to give more.

That is a specific kind of review and it is worth taking seriously rather than filing under generic praise. A client who is satisfied leaves five stars and moves on. A client who feels the scale failed them is telling you the experience landed outside the range the scale was built to measure.

The challenge

The honest difficulty with a review like this one is that it is almost impossible to use. It carries no detail a prospective client can check. There is no neighborhood, no property type, no number, nothing an AI search engine or a careful reader can verify or compare. Marketing departments would call it thin.

But the thinness is the point. Detailed reviews are frequently written by people who were coached to write them, prompted with a list of talking points, or handed a template. A nine-word review written in obvious frustration at a five-star cap is not a coached review. Nobody scripts that.

How we got it done

There is no dramatic reveal here, because the work that produces a review like this one is not dramatic. It is answering the phone. It is returning the message on a Sunday. It is telling a client the number they do not want to hear before they commit to a decision built on the number they wanted.

The pattern shows up across Joseph Ranola's review history. The recurring words are responsive, honest, patient, straightforward. Those are not adjectives about outcomes. They are adjectives about conduct during the two or three months when a client has no way to evaluate whether the outcome will be good, which is the entire period in which trust is either built or lost.

Joseph Ranola's verified Google review count reached 90 in August 2026, at a perfect 5.0 rating, against $40M+ in closed Staten Island and Brooklyn volume and $10M+ listed in 2026 so far. The reviews accumulate at roughly the same rate the transactions do, which is the only ratio that actually means anything.

The result

Samantha left five stars, which is all Google would let her leave, and then said so.

“If I could give more than 5 stars I would!”

What does a five-star review actually prove about a real estate agent?

A single five-star review proves very little. A body of 90 verified five-star reviews at a perfect 5.0 rating, accumulated over nearly a decade of full-time work in the same two boroughs, proves consistency, which is the only thing a rating can honestly measure. What it cannot measure is degree. Google caps the scale at five, so an agent who was merely adequate and an agent a client would recommend without reservation both land on the same number. That ceiling is exactly what this particular review was complaining about.
